Common Truck Maintenance Problems

Common Truck ProblemsDuring the colder winter months, it is common for truck drivers to experience increased issues with their vehicles. The dropping temperatures and harsh weather conditions can wreak havoc on your fleet. Here are some common truck maintenance problems that drivers and fleet managers are sure to face this winter season.

  1. Start Failure- If a truck has remained inactive for a long period of time; it could be difficult to start the truck up in the cold weather. Be sure to have all vehicle accessories, such as the heater and radio, switched to off when attempting to start up your truck.
  2. Frozen Wipers- If a heavy snowfall or freezing rain has occurred, your windshield wipers could become frozen and unusable. Allow time for your truck to defrost and your wipers to thaw out.
  3. Dead Battery- Because of the colder temperatures, the battery of your truck will be working double to make up for the energy. This means your battery will be more likely to die sooner. Be cautious of your battery and note the average life of the brand you use.
  4. Radiator- Colder weather can potentially cause your radiator to overheat, so be cautious of your fluid levels.
  5. Tires- Snow and ice make it difficult for tires to function properly during these cold months. Be sure to check the pressure of your tires before you begin your travels and be aware of the weather reports.
  6. Cracked Windshield- Ice is likely to crack your windshield during winter travel. Be aware of travel conditions before leaving and be sure to travel a safe distance behind other trucks.

Maintaining your Truck Fleet

Truck Fleet MaintenanceWhen you are in charge of maintaining a truck fleet, the weight of the world feels as though it rests on your shoulders. Maintaining only one truck can be difficult at times, so maintaining a full truck fleet can be a stressful job. For major maintenance, a truck fleet should be trusted to Middleton & Meads to ensure nothing is missed. However, there are some simple ways that truck drivers can assist in truck fleet maintenance to help preserve the life of your fleet.

So how can truck drivers help to maintain their own truck?

  • Before any travel commences, drivers should check the fluid levels in their truck. This includes oil, windshield wiper fluid, steering wheel fluid, and transmission fluid. If they notice any leaks, drivers should not take the truck on the road and instead call Middleton & Meads for further maintenance.
  • Drivers should check their mirrors, windows, and windshields for any potential cracks before travel. This will help prevent severe damage or accidents while driving.
  • Drivers should be mindful of annual maintenance that must be done. Being aware of when oil changes and other regular maintenance are due will help keep your truck fleet running smoothly.
