Traveling Safely at Night

Wednesday, January 21st, 2015

Night.Travel

For many truck drivers, one of the worst times to travel is during the night. The bright lights of passing cars can lead to headaches and the long hours can lead to fatigue in drivers. However, for many fleets, traveling at night is one of the major times travel occurs. There is less residential traffic on the roads, which means travel can be easier in some ways. If your fleet tends to travel often in the evening hours, consider these tips to stay safe.

  • Before travel, be sure to have your headlights aimed straight instead of leaving them uneven. This will help your headlights work more effectively during travel.
  • If your truck allows you, dim the lights of your dashboard. This will help avoid reflections that could lead to a distraction while driving.
  • Avoid wearing any type of glasses if possible when driving at night. If you are required to wear glasses, wear a prescription pair that comes with a coating that helps prevent reflection. Choose glasses over contacts when driving at night to avoid irritation and eye strain.
  • Become accustomed to looking for eyes of animals along the side or in the road. The light from your vehicle will reflect in their eyes, so you will be left seeing two bright, yet small, circles in the distance. Eyes will alert you to an animal’s presence up ahead, allowing you to slow down to avoid hitting the animal.
  • Be sure to clean your side mirrors before night travel. Streaks and smudges will only reflect the light of oncoming vehicles, making it difficult to see.

The Express Toll Lanes of I-95

Wednesday, January 14th, 2015

Residential and commercial drivers can rejoice because the I-95 Express Toll Lanes are in full use and working successfully. Plans had begun to take shape between 2003 and 2005 when officials began to look at ways to improve certain areas of I-95. Along with improving interchanges and bridges, officials began to map out where the eight miles of lane would run to make the most improvement to the area.

The decision was made to have the lanes run from just north of White Marsh Boulevard to the I-895 split. While these express lanes do include tolls, they have different rates depending on the time of day. Tolls have been at the following:

  • $1.75 during peak rush hours
  • $1.40 off peak hours
  • $0.40 overnight hours

The Express Toll Lanes are only the second electric only toll facility within the state of Maryland. By using the already implemented E-ZPass system along with video tolling, motorists are able to pass through the tolls at the normal highway speed without being forced to slow down and wait in a line. The benefits that were brought to the area because of this new system include:

  • Safer bridges for road travel
  • Reduction of traffic congestion
  • More reliable travel times for both the Express Toll Lanes and the original general purpose lanes

The Characteristics of Reliable Mechanic

Tuesday, January 6th, 2015

Reliable Mechanic

When you are managing an entire fleet of trucks or buses, chances are you won’t trust their maintenance with just anyone. An entire fleet of vehicles requires a reliable and responsible mechanic to conduct maintenance and repairs. If your fleet is mistreated, your business will then suffer. Here are some characteristics to look for in a reliable mechanic for your fleet.

  1. A reliable mechanic should be able to answer any and all of your maintenance and repair questions. Their ability to answer shows they have experience and training while also showing their attentiveness to your vehicles. If a mechanic is unable to answer your questions, they are probably not a reliable mechanic.
  2. You should be given an accurate finish date for your vehicles. Should problems occur, your mechanic should alert you in a timely manner. If your vehicle fails to be ready by the time given without any prior warning, your mechanic should be questioned.
  3. If you bring a vehicle in for specific repair work, a reliable mechanic will be able to identify the problem quickly and efficiently. A mechanic that takes a day or two to identify a simple problem most likely lacks the education needed to be a reliable mechanic.
  4. Your mechanic should be able to provide you with an itemized list of maintenance performed on your vehicles. They should be able to provide documented notes and maintenance history for your vehicles as well.

Common Truck Maintenance Mistakes

Friday, January 2nd, 2015

Truck Maintenance MistakesWhen it comes to maintaining your truck fleet, mistakes are bound to occur. With so many vehicles to manage at a time, there are times when drivers and fleet managers alike are sure to make maintenance mistakes. While mistakes happen, they can cause serious problems for your fleet. This is why managers and drivers alike should be aware of the common maintenance mistakes made when dealing with a truck fleet.

  1. When a warning light appears on the dash of your truck, a driver should immediately take note and work to have the problem resolved once they have reached their destination. Instead, many drivers tend to ignore the warning lights that appear on the dashboard. While there are occasions when the warning lights mean nothing and appear because of weather or a faulty sensor, neglecting a warning light could lead to serious damage to your truck.
  2. Neglecting to have routine maintenance performed on your vehicle is a very common maintenance mistake. While allowing an oil change or two to fall by the wayside may not seem like a big deal, failing to have these regular maintenance jobs performed could lead to serious problems for drivers.
  3. Failing to communicate with your mechanic is another maintenance mistake made by drivers and fleet managers. When talking with your mechanic, the driver or manager should be as specific as possible when describing a problem that is occurring. Never try to tell your mechanic what is wrong, that is for the mechanic to determine after observation and evaluation.
