Common Truck Maintenance Problems

Common Truck ProblemsDuring the colder winter months, it is common for truck drivers to experience increased issues with their vehicles. The dropping temperatures and harsh weather conditions can wreak havoc on your fleet. Here are some common truck maintenance problems that drivers and fleet managers are sure to face this winter season.

  1. Start Failure- If a truck has remained inactive for a long period of time; it could be difficult to start the truck up in the cold weather. Be sure to have all vehicle accessories, such as the heater and radio, switched to off when attempting to start up your truck.
  2. Frozen Wipers- If a heavy snowfall or freezing rain has occurred, your windshield wipers could become frozen and unusable. Allow time for your truck to defrost and your wipers to thaw out.
  3. Dead Battery- Because of the colder temperatures, the battery of your truck will be working double to make up for the energy. This means your battery will be more likely to die sooner. Be cautious of your battery and note the average life of the brand you use.
  4. Radiator- Colder weather can potentially cause your radiator to overheat, so be cautious of your fluid levels.
  5. Tires- Snow and ice make it difficult for tires to function properly during these cold months. Be sure to check the pressure of your tires before you begin your travels and be aware of the weather reports.
  6. Cracked Windshield- Ice is likely to crack your windshield during winter travel. Be aware of travel conditions before leaving and be sure to travel a safe distance behind other trucks.
