So what should truck drivers keep in mind about distracted driving?
- There are new regulations out through the FMCSA that prohibit the use of hand-held devices as well as texting while a driver is operating a commercial truck or vehicle on an interstate.
- These new rules are not applied to devices being used for dispatch, as long as they are being used as part of the fleet management.
- New research now shows that CMV drivers who participate in texting are 23 more times likely to become in a crash versus those who don’t text.
- Drivers who are caught texting while operating a truck are subject to fines, being displaced from their job, and disqualifications on the job.
- Truck drivers who are attempting to dial a phone are 6 times more likely to be involved in a crash.
- Implementing the use of hands-free options such as Bluetooth is typically acceptable while on the road, but only when the driver is able to still fully focus.
