Safe Driving Practices to Adopt

Friday, April 10th, 2015

Safe Driving Most pedestrian drivers think nothing of driving a large truck. Unless you have ever been behind the wheel of one of those trucks, it’s hard to comprehend how difficult the job can be. Truck driving requires safe driving practices to keep the roadways safe. To understand the dangers of truck driving, consider this:

  • In 2012, 300,000 accidents across the nation involved large trucks
  • In 2014, Time magazine named truck driving one of the most dangerous jobs on their top 10 list

Thin-Oil for Truck Fleets

Thursday, February 26th, 2015

It is no secret that oil is essential in keeping your truck fleet running. Over the past few years, many truck fleets have felt the strain of increasing fuel and oil prices in order to keep their fleets running. When the strain becomes too much, some hope to turn to thin-oil.

Thin-oil is a new type of oil that uses a lower-viscosity formula to improve the flow within the engine systems.  Thin-oil helps trucks reduce the types and amounts of emissions they release while also helping them to become more fuel efficient.

Thin-Oil

Thin-oil is still not available for full use. Tests are continuously being conducted to ensure the thin-oil can handle high speeds and prevent the metals from scraping during travel. Because the oil is thinner, it runs the risk of failing to properly lubricate the parts of your truck. While many are hoping the fuel will be ready next year, thin-oil is expected to be ready by 2017.

If your truck fleet can’t wait until thin-oil is available, consider other options. Technology is being developed that allows trucks to use natural gas and diesel fuel more efficiently and effectively. If you have questions about the fuel you are using for your truck fleet, discuss your options with your maintenance team.

The Express Toll Lanes of I-95

Wednesday, January 14th, 2015

Residential and commercial drivers can rejoice because the I-95 Express Toll Lanes are in full use and working successfully. Plans had begun to take shape between 2003 and 2005 when officials began to look at ways to improve certain areas of I-95. Along with improving interchanges and bridges, officials began to map out where the eight miles of lane would run to make the most improvement to the area.

The decision was made to have the lanes run from just north of White Marsh Boulevard to the I-895 split. While these express lanes do include tolls, they have different rates depending on the time of day. Tolls have been at the following:

  • $1.75 during peak rush hours
  • $1.40 off peak hours
  • $0.40 overnight hours

The Express Toll Lanes are only the second electric only toll facility within the state of Maryland. By using the already implemented E-ZPass system along with video tolling, motorists are able to pass through the tolls at the normal highway speed without being forced to slow down and wait in a line. The benefits that were brought to the area because of this new system include:

  • Safer bridges for road travel
  • Reduction of traffic congestion
  • More reliable travel times for both the Express Toll Lanes and the original general purpose lanes

Common Truck Maintenance Problems

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2014

Common Truck ProblemsDuring the colder winter months, it is common for truck drivers to experience increased issues with their vehicles. The dropping temperatures and harsh weather conditions can wreak havoc on your fleet. Here are some common truck maintenance problems that drivers and fleet managers are sure to face this winter season.

  1. Start Failure- If a truck has remained inactive for a long period of time; it could be difficult to start the truck up in the cold weather. Be sure to have all vehicle accessories, such as the heater and radio, switched to off when attempting to start up your truck.
  2. Frozen Wipers- If a heavy snowfall or freezing rain has occurred, your windshield wipers could become frozen and unusable. Allow time for your truck to defrost and your wipers to thaw out.
  3. Dead Battery- Because of the colder temperatures, the battery of your truck will be working double to make up for the energy. This means your battery will be more likely to die sooner. Be cautious of your battery and note the average life of the brand you use.
  4. Radiator- Colder weather can potentially cause your radiator to overheat, so be cautious of your fluid levels.
  5. Tires- Snow and ice make it difficult for tires to function properly during these cold months. Be sure to check the pressure of your tires before you begin your travels and be aware of the weather reports.
  6. Cracked Windshield- Ice is likely to crack your windshield during winter travel. Be aware of travel conditions before leaving and be sure to travel a safe distance behind other trucks.

At Middleton & Meads, we are ready to help maintain and repair your truck fleet during the winter season. While many accidents can be prevented, we know that others are unavoidable. Motor Vehicle Enforcement Criteria

Tuesday, November 25th, 2014

Motor Vehicle Enforcement CriteriaTruck inspections along with motor vehicle enforcement are an important part of vehicle and road safety across the nation. Without motor vehicle enforcement, truck drivers would have the ability to ignore safety codes and traffic laws, creating an unsafe travel enforcement. . The American Transportation Research Institute released a report entitled “Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement- Top 10 High-Performance States.” The report ranks the states on a point system spanning over eleven main criteria areas. Maryland was proudly ranked number 1 in this report, while also ranking number 1 in the level of inspection intensity, a report made by Overdrive Magazine. Maryland received such a ranking from Overdrive because of their rate of inspection per lane-mile of interstate within their state borders. The Maryland inspection rate was three times that of the national average of state inspections.

Motor Vehicle Enforcement Criteria

The criteria areas below were used by the American Transportation Research Institute to determine the ranking of states in motor vehicle enforcement. All of the criteria is based per million vehicle miles traveled.

  1. Overall Crashes
  2. Overall Violations
  3. Fatal Crashes
  4. Traffic Enforcement Stops
  5. Roadside Inspections
  6. Red Flag Violations
  7. Crash Predictor Violations
  8. Clean Inspections- Inspections without violation
  9. Violations During Traffic Enforcement Stops
  10. Out of Service Violations
  11. State Funds Expended per Federal Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program Funds

Winter Maintenance Tips

Winter Maintenance

As the weather continues to grow colder, winter will be on its way. With the winter season comes harsh weather and dangerous road conditions. In order to travel safely, bus and truck drivers should be cautious when maneuvering the roads this season.

There are some simple steps for drivers to take in order to ensure proper winter maintenance:

  1. Before road travel, check road conditions, weather conditions, and traffic reports. This will allow you to plan out your trip properly.
  2. Determine at least one main route of travel along with two alternative routes. Once the routes are determined, let a few people know your plans. Let them also know your departure and arrival times as well.
  3. Check your tire tread and tire pressure before any road travel. This will not only help with travel safety, but fuel efficiency as well.
  4. Ensure all fluid levels are full before any road travel. Any low levels during travel could cause breakdowns.

When it comes to winter maintenance, look to Middleton & Meads. Our bus maintenance and repair services will ensure your buses are safe on the road this winter season. Should your bus experience a breakdown, let our repair services fix your vehicle and send you back on the road quickly.
