Common Truck Maintenance Problems

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2014

Common Truck ProblemsDuring the colder winter months, it is common for truck drivers to experience increased issues with their vehicles. The dropping temperatures and harsh weather conditions can wreak havoc on your fleet. Here are some common truck maintenance problems that drivers and fleet managers are sure to face this winter season.

  1. Start Failure- If a truck has remained inactive for a long period of time; it could be difficult to start the truck up in the cold weather. Be sure to have all vehicle accessories, such as the heater and radio, switched to off when attempting to start up your truck.
  2. Frozen Wipers- If a heavy snowfall or freezing rain has occurred, your windshield wipers could become frozen and unusable. Allow time for your truck to defrost and your wipers to thaw out.
  3. Dead Battery- Because of the colder temperatures, the battery of your truck will be working double to make up for the energy. This means your battery will be more likely to die sooner. Be cautious of your battery and note the average life of the brand you use.
  4. Radiator- Colder weather can potentially cause your radiator to overheat, so be cautious of your fluid levels.
  5. Tires- Snow and ice make it difficult for tires to function properly during these cold months. Be sure to check the pressure of your tires before you begin your travels and be aware of the weather reports.
  6. Cracked Windshield- Ice is likely to crack your windshield during winter travel. Be aware of travel conditions before leaving and be sure to travel a safe distance behind other trucks.

Safe Holiday Truck Travel

Wednesday, November 12th, 2014

As the holidays quickly approach, those who drive buses and tractor trailers are noticing an increase in traffic on the roadways. As you continue to find an influx of traffic during the season, consider these tips to stay safe on the roadways this holiday season.

  1. Before you begin your travel, determine two main routes of travel for your destination. You should also have several alternative routes determined as well. This will allow for easy navigating should traffic become unbearable.
  2. Always consult traffic and weather reports before travel. This will help drivers remain safe on the roads by being aware of travel conditions. If severe weather is being called for, consider changing your time of departure.
  3. Eliminate distractions in your cabin while on the roads. Distractions such as eating, drinking, and smart devices will remove your attention from the road, leaving your vulnerable to accidents.
  4. Both commercial and residential drivers should be aware of each other’s presence on the road at all times. Road signs and traffic devices should be obeyed at all times to keep drivers safe during the busy holiday season.
  5. Maintaining your vehicle is essential to keeping all drivers safe this holiday season. This means bringing your fleet into Middleton & Meads for regular maintenance. Our team will ensure your vehicles remain in full working order. Noticing a serious problem before traveling will keep drivers, both commercial and residential, safe.

Winter Maintenance

As the weather continues to grow colder, winter will be on its way. With the winter season comes harsh weather and dangerous road conditions. In order to travel safely, bus and truck drivers should be cautious when maneuvering the roads this season.

There are some simple steps for drivers to take in order to ensure proper winter maintenance:

  1. Before road travel, check road conditions, weather conditions, and traffic reports. This will allow you to plan out your trip properly.
  2. Determine at least one main route of travel along with two alternative routes. Once the routes are determined, let a few people know your plans. Let them also know your departure and arrival times as well.
  3. Check your tire tread and tire pressure before any road travel. This will not only help with travel safety, but fuel efficiency as well.

Lower Fuel Prices

Wednesday, August 20th, 2014

With fuel prices hitting many drivers right in the wallet this summer season, a recent drop is sure to bring relief across most of the nation. As of August 19th, the average fuel price is currently $3.835. This makes the national average price about 6.5 cents lower than it was around this time last year. For those who rely on fuel for their business, especially trucking companies and fleets, now is a great time to educate your drivers on the price of fuel in the nation.

Here are some areas that are seeing fuel price decreases:

  • Central Atlantic: 1.4 cent decrease
  • Lower Atlantic: 1.2 cent decrease
  • East Coast: 1.2 cent decrease
  • Gulf Coast: 1.1 cent decrease

Unfortunately, California saw a .2 of a cent increase in price of diesel fuel.

As of August 19th, 2014, the average costs of diesel in some of the US regions are as follows:

  • West Coast: $4.015
  • Gulf Coast: $3.739
  • Midwest: $3.78

While many of these prices bring relief, it is important for drivers to keep in mind that prices vary from state to state. Do your homework before fueling up this summer to find the best prices in your area. One way to get the most of your lower priced fuel is to maintain your truck fleet for improved fuel efficiency. Proper truck maintenance will ensure that your fuel goes farther, which is better for your budget.

Easy Truck Maintenance Tips

Truck Maintenance

When it comes to maintaining an entire truck fleet, maintenance is essential. However, keeping up with trucking maintenance can be hard work. When it comes to major repairs and maintenance, trust Middleton & Meads to handle your fleet of trucks. However, there are some simple ways for your drivers to assist in the overall maintenance of your truck fleet. Simple driver maintenance will help your fleet run efficiently while also catching possible damage and problem areas sooner.

  1. Check your engine belt after travel for cracks and damage. Without your engine belt, your truck will not be able to function.
  2. Schedule regular oil changes for your truck. Fresh oil will ensure your truck runs smoothly for longer. This also helps with your truck’s fuel efficiency.
  3. Determine if your air filter is experiencing a clog.
  4. Check all of your lights before travel. This will include your brake lights, head lights, fog lights, turning signals, and tail lights. Your vehicle lights are essential when traveling at night or in poor weather.
  5. Check the tire pressure and tread of your vehicle before travel. This will prevent you from blowing a tire while on the road. This will also help increase your overall fuel efficiency.
  6. Checking your vehicle’s windshield wipers is a subtle way to maintain your vehicle. Your wipers help your visibility while driving in poor weather, which ultimately prevents drivers from having an accident.

Common Truck Accident Causes

Distractions while Driving

Truck driving accidents are common on the road, especially on highways. Highways and major roadways are known for their congestion during certain times of the day. This means that trucking accidents are inevitable. However, there are some causes of trucking accidents that could potentially be avoided. If you are managing a fleet of trucks and truck drivers, be sure your drivers are aware of ways to avoid trucking accidents.

  1. Speed- Speeding is never a smart idea for any drivers, especially truck drivers. Trucks, especially those carrying freight, take longer to stop once the brakes are engaged. If they are traveling at a fast speed, the truck will take even longer to stop.
  2. Distractions- There is a number of scenarios that can occur while on the road. Drivers never know when a car will stop suddenly in front of them, cut in front of them, or possible debris could fly on the road. Because of this, the road needs a driver’s full attention. Removing outside distractions like food, passengers, and the use of cell phones can help drivers stay more focused on the road.
  3. Aggressive Driving- Aggressive driving is never ok, especially coming from a truck driver. The acts of tailgating, brake-checking, speeding, and cutting other vehicles off are sure ways to cause an accident out on the road.
  4. Under the Influence- Drivers should never get behind the wheel while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Impaired coordination, reflexes, and overall motor skills will cause drivers to be extremely dangerous on the road.
