Professional Auto Mechanic: How To Repair Drum Brakes

Saturday, April 13th, 2013

You need to repair your drum brake. What goes into repairing drum brakes?

Before we can answer that question, we have to tell you how drum brakes work.

Drum brakes function from shoes pressing on a spinning surface/ drum.

In most cars the drum brakes are installed on rear wheels. The drum  brakes are very essential to the emergency brake mechanism.

The drum brakes include two brake shoes and a piston. The drum brakes have two kinds of mechanisms – the adjuster mechanism and the emergency brake mechanism.

Drum brakes can only function properly when they are close to the drum but not touching the drum.

When the shoes of the drum brakes wear down, the piston needs more fluid to reduce the distance between the drum and the shoes.

During emergency brake situations, the drum brake design must work as a simple cable actuation mechanism.

If the seals of drum brakes wear down, the emergency break will fail.

To avoid this danger, break seals should be immediately replaced.

Middleton & Meads as a professional auto mechanic can repair your drum breaks.

This is accomplished by lifting the vehicle to examine the drum brake damage at the brake seals.

Next the brake wheel must be removed with a lug wrench and the brake drum must be detached.

Afterwards wheel cylinders are removed and new ones added.

Reattach the break drums and break wheel to complete the repair.

The repair of break drums should always be completed when the vehicle is cool.

For best repairs, hire Middleton  & Meads for drum brake repairs.

Maryland Truck Company Forced to Shut Down by FMCSA

Wednesday, June 13th, 2012

A Maryland trucking company, Gunthers Transport, LLC, was forced to close last year after it was issued an “imminent hazard out-of-service order” by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). This was after a FMCSA safety review of the company’s operations found several hours-of-service and vehicle maintenance violations. It was determined that these violations substantially increased the likelihood of serious injury or death to the motoring public.

  1. Gunthers Transport allowed its drivers to falsify their hours-of-service records and exceed the 11-hour limit for daily driving.
  2. Gunthers Transport did not require its drivers to perform pre-trip vehicle safety inspections.

“Safety is our number-one priority,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “Commercial truck companies that recklessly disregard federal safety regulations will be shut down and removed from our roadways.”

A copy of the imminent hazard out-of-service order can be viewed at  http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/documents/about/news/2011/GUNTHERS-TRANSPORTS-LLC.pdf.

“FMCSA has zero tolerance for unsafe trucking companies that place the traveling public at risk. If they do not play by the safety rules of the road, we will take away their ability to operate,” said FMCSA Administrator Anne S. Ferro.

Don’t let the same thing happen to your company!

Trucking Industry News: Summer Maintenance Tips for your Truck

Wednesday, May 9th, 2012

Just as truck maintenance is crucial before the frigid winter weather sets in, so too is it crucial before the scorching summer weather takes affect. The typical hot, dry, and humid summer weather here in Maryland causes additional stresses on your truck. This makes spring (NOW!) the perfect time to address truck maintenance.

Summer Truck Maintenance Tips

  1. Cooling System Issues: An estimated 40 percent of downtime is caused by cooling system problems, problems that are 100% preventable. So be sure to perform routine engine maintenance to ensure that your truck is running as efficiently as possible.
  2. Engine Coolant: Your engine coolant should be checked every 500 operating hours, 20,000 miles or three months, whichever comes first. It is important to not only monitor coolant levels, but also color. Coolant that appears cloudy or has particulates floating could be an indication of bigger problems.
  3. Tire Pressure: The most critical factor in tire maintenance is proper inflation. Proper inflation leads to proper contact with the road, which will improve traction and braking capabilities. It will also ensure your tires last longer.
  4. Electrical Systems: Be sure to check the alternator’s wiring, battery, battery cables, and the wiring from the engine’s electrical controls. Make sure everything is in proper working order, wires are not frayed and there are no signs of corrosion.
  5. Middleton & Meads: The Middleton & Meads Corporate Headquarters is located at 1900 South Hanover Street in Baltimore. The over four-acre site contains the 35,000 square foot 37 service bay Mechanical Repair building, and the 15,000 square foot 16 bay Collision Repair Center, along with three acres of secure vehicle storage.

Trucking Industry News: Handheld Cell Phone Ban for CMV Drivers

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

As of January 3, 2012, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s final rule banning handheld cell phone use officially went into effect. The rule bans all interstate commercial motor vehicle drivers, interstate HAZMAT drivers and intrastate HAZMAT drivers from holding, dialing, and even reaching for a mobile phone.

Any driver found in violation of this rule will face civil penalties up to $2,750 for each offense. Drivers with multiple offenses (two or more violations in three years) risk disqualification from operating a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV).

Companies found allowing drivers to use handheld devices – including “push-to-talk” – while driving face a maximum penalty of $11,000.

CMV drivers who wish to still use a mobile phone or other handheld device must use a hands-free device, located in close proximity, which requires the pressing of no more than a single button to initiate or terminate a phone call.

If you have any questions about FMCSA rule banning handheld use while driving a CMV, please contact Middleton and Meads by calling 410-752-5588 or click here today!
