The FMCSA and Distracted Driving

CSA- ScoresThe Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has set many standards, rules, regulations, and policies in place to help keep drivers safe while on the road. In recent years, the FMCSA has shifted its focus onto distracted driving and truck drivers. Because of the increasing possibilities of distracted driving, the FMCSA has worked to make it clear where they stand on distracted driving. However, in order to properly follow the policies put in place, it is important for drivers to understand what the FMCSA considers distracted driving.

The rules put in place by the FMCSA regarding hand-held devices are simple and concise. They are to never:

  • Read
  • Dial
  • Reach for
  • Hold
  • Text

When it comes to texting, the regulations put in place by the FMCSA state define the act as “manually entering alphanumeric text into, or reading text from, an electronic device.” There are also separate rules that help define what a mobile phone is when driving:

  • Dialing a device by pressing one or more buttons
  • Using a hand to hold or dial a phone
  • Reaching for a phone that requires the driver to remove his or attention from the road

This means that any mobile device use by a truck driver, with the exception of calling for emergency personnel, must be kept hands free. This means that the phone must be in a close proximity to the driver while being activated without the need to use hands. This means that the driver can activate the phone using a single button or by speak commands.
