If you were on the internet in the Baltimore, Maryland area this past weekend during the ice and sleet storm that rained down on the area, you undoubtedly saw the tragic and terrifying video of a tanker exploding on I-95 in Baltimore traffic. The video serves as a tragic reminder of the importance of winter truck safety throughout the East coast. How can you stay safe this winter and avoid a deadly accident?

What Happened?

If you haven’t seen the video of the I-95 tanker explosion, a truck carrying fuel rolls off of a highway bridge in Baltimore traffic and explodes onto the railroad tracks underneath. The tragic accident set off a huge string of other accidents on the slippery roads that ended with the driver of the tanker and another person dead in the aftermath. An additional 23 people were taken to the nearby University of Maryland Medical Center after the crash. While ice and winter weather conditions were an obvious part of the crash, they might not tell the entire story.

What Can You Do to Help Increase Your Level of Winter Truck Safety?

Aside from taking care of yourself and using the proper driving techniques, there are many things you can do to your truck to help make sure it is ready for the winter ahead, including the following:

  • Check your tires to make sure that they are properly inflated and in good condition. If you use winter tires, change them now before snow starts falling on the roads. Traction is important when it comes to avoiding accidents in Baltimore traffic, so switch now and drive safer.
  • Change the oil in your truck, as it can thicken as the weather gets colder. Use a special oil blend designed for the cold weather to make sure that no malfunctions occur.
  • Check and replace your battery if it is near the end of its life. You use a lot of power in starting up your truck, so make sure it is in top condition before the snow really starts coming down.
