How Trucking Became One of the Most Important Jobs in America

Without trucking, there are many things we just wouldn’t have access to, and it would be extraordinarily slow and expensive.

Without a doubt, trucking is one of the most important jobs in America. Without trucking, there are many things we just wouldn’t have access to, and it would be extraordinarily slow and expensive. The technological advances of the last 150 years or so have been groundbreaking in every industry, including trucking and hauling freight.

Changing the 20th Century

In the late 1800s, trucking wasn’t even thought of yet. Back then, trains and carriages were the only means of moving shipments across the country, even from one state to the next. This method took a long time and was subject to unfair shipping practices. Once cars and trucks became popular though, the old ways lost their influence. Now we see all kinds of trucks – once upon a time, that wouldn’t have been possible.

World War I inspired the development of bigger tires and more powerful engines, which allowed trucks to go further and faster than ever before. In the 1920s, nationwide coverage was achieved for the first time. In the 1940s, interstate highways were starting to be built, which also helped shape the impact of trucking on American industry, economy, and history.

CB radios allowed truckers to communicate more quickly and effectively with each other to locate shortcuts and avoid road hazards. Even with modern concerns such as fuel becoming more expensive and emissions affecting the environment, trucking is still playing a huge part in making our country what it is.

In the Present Day

Even with the theories of self-driving vehicles and robotic trucks, truck drivers are still a vital part of the business. They connect suppliers with manufacturers and retailers. They’ll also transport cargo to ports where it can then be shipped overseas.

Trucking is also important because it gives hope to millions of people that they can hold steady employment in these uncertain economic times. Truckers also have a loud voice when it comes to improving national infrastructure – hoping that roads, bridges, and tunnels are repaired and kept in good condition. They also help define safe speed limits and how much rest drivers should get, even if they aren’t involved in long-haul or short-haul trucking.
