3 Jobs You Can Do with Your CDL (Besides Hauling Freight)

Have your CDL? There’s so much you can do!

If you’re just starting out as a truck driver, you might think that all it qualifies you to do is to haul freight. Hauling freight and other types of cargo is the most common use for your CDL. But here are some other possibilities that are still open to you if you wish to do something else.

Delivering Mail

Once you finish your CDL training, you can apply to work for the United States Postal Service. Mail delivery will be one of your tasks, along with picking up and dropping off multiple large loads of packages. You could even be responsible for carrying letters from one part of the country to the next. That could involve crossing multiple states all in the same trip.

Perform Emissions Testing

Emissions testing is critical for all vehicles. If you’re a truck driver, it becomes even more important. You may not have realized this, but your CDL also allows you to work in the scientific and engineering fields and conduct emissions testing for companies that design and build diesel engines. Truckers will often give these engines road tests to evaluate how harmful they are to the environment, the road, and other vehicles and travelers around them.

Restaurant Services

If you’ve ever been interested in working in a restaurant setting, but your culinary skills are nonexistent, you may still be able to work with restaurants. You just won’t be responsible for cooking or bringing the meals out to customers. It would be your responsibility to deliver food supplies to restaurants locally, or all over the country. Doing this important job means you’ll haul the necessary ingredients. The grease and oil needed for cooking are vital parts of the food preparation process, and that has to be delivered by truck with a properly trained driver. And prepared, pre-packaged meals are just as important as the raw ingredients. You’ll need to take these from one place to the next as well.
