How to Avoid Seasonal Illnesses

How to Avoid Seasonal Illnesses

Being sick can make it very difficult to do your job.

When you’re sick, you don’t feel your best. As such, your concentration and alertness will suffer, because all you will want to do is rest. However, when you’re a truck driver, you won’t really have time to do that.

Kill the Germs

Germs are the cause of many seasonal illnesses. Whether you use hand sanitizer or hand wipes that you keep in the cabin with you, you need some way to kill the germs. These methods can be a huge help, because you won’t always be able to stop and wash your hands with soap and water, especially on long trips. Take the time to clean off your seat, your steering wheel, and anything anyone might have handled before you.

Take Your Vitamins

Taking your vitamins is incredibly important. Eating healthy while on the road can be tricky, and if you don’t get all the nutrients you need, you’ll start to feel exhausted far sooner than you would expect. This can make any seasonal illnesses you catch feel even worse. Plus, you’ll take longer to recover. Now that fall is here and winter is on the way, make sure to get enough Vitamin C. Real fruit juice isn’t always easy to get, so take supplements whenever you need to.

Drink Plenty of Water

Water helps every system in your body function, and it also helps you fight off seasonal illnesses. You might not think that you can get dehydrated while driving a truck, but almost any activity can make you thirsty. The side effects of dehydration, such as fatigue, dizziness, and headache, can make it difficult and even dangerous to keep driving when you feel ill.

Rest

Don’t spend too much time driving all at once. If you’re tired, find a rest stop to park in. Or, get on the radio and look for a truck stop recommended by other drivers. Getting as much sleep as you can will help you bounce back. Even if you can’t stop for a quick nap, stopping for a stretch or a walk can be highly beneficial.
