How to Care for Your Mental Health While on the Road

Truck driving is a very rewarding and worthwhile career, but like anything else it can sometimes take a toll on your mental state.

Truck driving is a very rewarding and worthwhile career, but like anything else it can sometimes take a toll on your mental state. Sometimes even the best drivers need a mental health break! Here are some tips to help you care for your mental health while you’re out on the road.

Keep Your Truck Clean

Clutter can be stressful. Even if you’re “just a messy person”, spending time in a cluttered environment can affect your mental state. Reducing clutter in your truck may also help to reduce your mental “clutter” as well. Just crank up some good music and clean it out. You may find that the cleaning is therapeutic by itself.

Napping

We aren’t suggesting that you fall asleep for several hours when you should be working. However, 30 minutes can be just enough to clear your mind and boost your energy so that you can make sure your job gets done safely.

Go for a Walk

Taking a few minutes to walk around a truck stop or a local park is a fantastic way to improve your physical health just as much as your mental health. Exercise releases endorphins, which lift your mood and can help you relax a little.

Call a Friend

Sometimes, you just need a friend to help clear your mind. Someone who knows you well will know just what to say to help you get your mind back to where it needs to be. Plus, trucking can be lonely so it is nice to have someone to talk to once in a while.

Read a Book

Getting lost in a story is a great way to help you not get lost in your own thoughts. A good book will draw you in and hold your attention so that your mind can’t wander. As a trucker, you probably don’t have time to pick up a book and read it. However, you can listen to an audiobook! If you have a smart phone, check the app store for an audiobook app. Many libraries also have smartphone apps that allow you to check out and listen to audiobooks from your phone. If you don’t have a smartphone you can get books on CDs, and even on cassette tapes if you have an older truck that can play them!
