New Trucker: Preparing for Your First Day

The first day of a new job can be a little overwhelming, and trucking is no exception. Here are some tips to help you as you prepare for your first day as a trucker.

The first day of a new job can be a little overwhelming, and trucking is no exception. You have to adjust to the new team, learn logging procedures, familiarize yourself with new equipment, and all sorts of other things. As with everything else you do in your trucking career, preparation is key. Here are some tips to help you as you prepare for your first day as a trucker.

Paperwork

Any time you start a new job, there’s a bunch of documents that the HR department needs copies of in order for you to work. Some of the important papers you’ll want to make sure you have with you are:

  • Your birth certificate and/or social security card
  • CDL-A license
  • Up-to-date physical

Personal Items

To best prepare yourself, bring enough clothing for a whole week. Include layers, because you never know what kind of weather you’ll encounter and layers will allow you to be comfortable no matter what the climate is like. Make sure you toss in a pair of boots and an extra pair of comfortable shoes.

If you take prescription medication, make sure you’ve got enough. If not, it’s time for a trip to the pharmacy. Include whatever toiletries you will need for the week- soap, shampoo, toothbrush and toothpaste, comb, shaving cream and razor, contact solution, and any other toiletries you require. A good general rule of thumb is that it’s better to have it and not need it than it is to need it and not have it.

Lastly, toss in sleeping gear: pillow, blanket, sheets, sleeping bag, and a CPAP if you use one. You may also want to include headphones or earplugs and a sleep mask if that will make you more comfortable.

In Case of Emergency

Emergencies can happen at any time. Just be prepared so that if something happens, you’re ready. Your emergency kit should include:

  • Extra food and water
  • Toolbox
  • First aid kit
  • Flashlight
  • Change of clothes
  • A space heater that’s less than 1500 watts in case you need to wait in the cold
