Tips to Avoid Distracted Driving

Distracted driving is a real problem today.

Distracted driving is a real problem today. Drivers experience a wide variety of sights and sounds while on the road, and any number of them can cause accidents. When drivers are distracted, they can miss important details, which can sometimes cost people their lives. Fortunately, avoiding distracted driving is actually quite simple!

Secure Any and All Loose Objects

Avoid tossing things on a seat. When your truck is in motion, your items could dislodge and you do not want to be tempted to try to catch them. Focusing on the road should be your top priority.

Map It Out

Before you set out on your journey, figure out how you’re going to get there. If it’s a particularly long haul or if you know you will be stopping along the way, plan your stops and memorize your route one segment at a time. If you’re using GPS, make sure your preferences are all set correctly before you leave.

Make Adjustments Before You Leave

Check mirrors and air conditioning/ heating before you start driving. Adjusting the temperature while driving may seem like a small thing, but if you’re paying attention to that dial, you’re still distracted.

Don’t Eat While You Drive

You can also avoid distracted driving by not eating while you drive. Instead, eat before you leave. If you’re hungry while on the road, that can be a good time for a stop. It may even be beneficial for you to pack a meal. This way, you can control what you’re eating and you don’t need to settle for fast food. Packing food is also good if you’re on a tight schedule because it can save you loads of time.

Turn Off Your Phone

Cell phones are one of the leading causes of distracted driving. Sometimes, truckers need to leave their phone on for security purposes. If that’s you, simply put it on silent and put it away somewhere so it can’t distract you. If you must make a call, send a text, or use you phone for any other reason, just pull over. Many smartphones have settings that will disable communication while driving. Look at your phone to see if it has this helpful safety feature.
