As a new trucker, you are probably going to get several companies who would like you to come drive for them. There aren’t as many well-qualified drivers as there once were, so companies are on the lookout for the good ones. When searching for the trucking company that’s right for you, be sure to ask these three questions.
Pay and Benefits Structures
You will want to know what the company will pay you for and when to expect it. Do they pay you while you wait for shippers? How many miles should you expect to get? What is considered full time in order to receive benefits? What are the benefits? You will also want to know when you can expect to be at home and for how long. Will you have a truck assigned to you? Or will you be switching around for every run? These things and more are all things you will want to ask.
Safety Records
Another set of extremely important questions to ask is to inquire about the trucking company’s safety records. You will want to make sure that you are partnering with a company that does everything they can to keep their equipment in good condition and their drivers safe. Is there a set time of day that you will be driving or do you get to do the planning? It may help to ask other drivers, especially if you find a driver who has worked with a particular company. No one knows what it’s like to work somewhere better than those who have already worked there.
The Company’s Freight Lanes
You will also want to know the company’s routes. Will your route be taking you close to home? What will the weather be like? When should you expect traffic? The more you know about where you will be going, the better you can plan how to get there.
