3 Ways to Save Yourself from Back Pain While on the Road

Unfortunately, back pain is a common fact of life for many truck drivers.

Unfortunately, back pain is a common fact of life for many truck drivers. Spending that much time behind the wheel tends to take its toll on the body. Fortunately, back pain doesn’t have to make you miserable if you know how to alleviate it. Follow these tips to keep your back pain-free!

An Ergonomic Seat Cushion

Even though truck seat design has come a long way over the years, they are still notoriously uncomfortable, providing little to no support for your back. This lack of support leaves drivers slouching, constantly having to adjust themselves in order to remain comfortable, which can cause them to become distracted while driving. Not only will an ergonomic cushion make you more comfortable while driving, it will remove the distraction of constant adjustments. The additional support will also prevent back pain while you’re not driving.

Regular Exercise

Another way to avoid back pain is to exercise regularly. There aren’t really any ways to move around while you’re driving, and when you sit still for extended periods of time your back can become quite stiff. Taking just a few minutes out of every day just to move those muscles a bit will really help. Even if you only have time for a quick stretch, it can still make a difference.

The Three-Point Stance

You may not realize this, but the way you get in and out of your truck can also cause back pain. Getting in and out of the cab requires you to climb, which if you’re not careful can cause back pain. You can avoid this by using a three-point stance whenever you enter or exit your truck’s cab. You should always maintain 3 points of contact with the rig. To get in, grab one of the handle bars on either side of the door and place a foot on the running board and pull yourself up. To get out, use the same process except in reverse. Using both your arms and your legs to get in and out of your truck can relieve a lot of strain on your back.
