4 Helpful Tips for Caring for Your Mental Health

Staying on schedule can be difficult due to the unpredictability of traffic and weather patterns, and planning is a huge help but even that only goes so far when it comes to mental health.

Trucking is a fulfilling and rewarding career, but like any other career, it can also be stressful at times. Staying on schedule can be difficult due to the unpredictability of traffic and weather patterns, and planning is a huge help but even that only goes so far. If you’re having trouble keeping your head in the game, here are some helpful tips to help you de-stress.

De-Clutter

If you find that your thoughts seem crowded or cluttered, begin the de-cluttering process by cleaning out your truck. It can be difficult to de-clutter your thoughts when you’re surrounded by disorder. Crank up your favorite music on the radio and the cleaning won’t feel like as much of a chore!

Sleep

Sleep has a profound effect on so many parts of our lives, and the amount of sleep you’re getting can really affect your mental health. When you’re on the road, the more miles you drive the better. More important than that, though, you have to keep downtime in mind too. If you don’t sleep enough, it can become a safety issue and no one wants that! Even a quick 30-minute cat nap can be enough to help you clear your head and get a nice little energy boost.

Exercise

Exercise is one of the best things that you can do to care for your mental health, both during your time on the road and days spent at home. When you exercise, it releases endorphins in your brain. This jump-starts your brain, improves your mood, and helps your body relax.

Phone a Friend

An unfortunate side effect of driving a truck all the time is that sometimes it can start to feel lonely. Most truck drivers really enjoy the quiet that trucking offers, but even the most seasoned vets still need some conversation every once in a while. If you find yourself feeling lonely, use a couple minutes of your next stop to call up someone you’re missing. You can even use a video chatting app on your smartphone to see the other person face to face, which brings your friends and loved ones even closer!
