Safety Advice Every Truck Driver Should Follow

Here is some valuable safety advice that every truck driver from rookies to seasoned vets should remember.

Rookie truck drivers spend weeks training and learning how to drive their rigs. But once they’re out on their own, sometimes some of the safety rules and regulations they’ve learned can be forgotten. Here is some valuable safety advice that every truck driver from rookies to seasoned vets should remember.

Fatigued? Pull Over

Driving while tired is extremely dangerous. If you feel fatigued, it’s crucial that you pull over and get some rest. Every truck driver on the road has driven while fatigued, whether or not they were behind the wheel of a truck; they could just as easily be driving a passenger car. Whenever a truck driver feels they’re too tired to continue, they should stop. No matter how experienced you are, falling asleep on the road while driving should be avoided at all costs.

Carefully Change Lanes

Another safety situation where truck drivers should exercise caution is when they need to change lanes. Always change lanes as carefully as possible. Driving along busy and crowded highways is all part of the job. When you have to change lanes, don’t wait until the last minute. Make your decision and follow through. Check your blind spots and make sure no other vehicles are in the lane next to you. Also make sure there are no other cars behind you that might accelerate to get around you. A cautious truck driver will also take note of turn signals and speed changes before changing lanes.

Pass Other Trucks Safely

When two trucks pull up alongside each and both are unable to pass the other, it can cause a ripple effect of problems for everyone else on the road. For instance, two potential situations that could come from this stalemate could be the risk of a tire blowout or road rage from other non-trucker drivers.

Obey Road Signs

Pay attention to any and all road signs that you encounter. Obey the warnings you see so that you can be aware of hazards and changing conditions around you. These signs might inform you that a lane is about to end, or that another lane is closed. Road signs will also warn you if a construction site is coming up. Be on the lookout for low overpasses, because trying to squeeze through could lead to a crash. Road signs will let you know where these overpasses are so that you can be prepared. Road signs are there for a reason!
