Tips for Making the Open Road Feel Like Home

Tips for Making the Open Road Feel Like Home

Many truckers find themselves feeling homesick after several days out on the road.

Transitioning from one career to another takes quite a bit of adjustment. If you’re transitioning into a trucking career, you’re going from being home at the end of every day to being home every couple of days. It takes a great deal of balance to succeed at this. Many truckers find themselves feeling homesick after several days out on the road. Fortunately, there are several ways to combat the homesick feelings that sometimes occur when you’re out on a long haul!

Keep the Lines of Communication Open

If you’re feeling homesick, you probably want to call a friend or loved one back home. Unfortunately, this isn’t really possible when traveling down the road at 65 mph. So, you need to take every opportunity you can to stay in contact with your “home base”. Any time you stop to refuel, grab a bite to eat, or even to just stretch your legs, just take a couple seconds to send a text. Your loved ones know that you’re working and can’t spend a ton of time socializing, but they will surely appreciate the effort!

Scheduling

When your workspace and your sleeping space are the same, it can be difficult to separate the two. Scheduling can help to alleviate this a bit. You probably already have a working schedule from your dispatcher, but it is important to make sure you take time out here and there for personal activities. Taking time for yourself, to communicate with loved ones, read a book, go for a walk, or stream your favorite TV show can significantly reduce your stress levels.

Take Advantage of Available Technology

Today more than ever before, advancements in technology keep us connected. Cellular networks are as strong as they’ve ever been, and smartphones are basically pocket-sized supercomputers. There are thousands of mobile applications for communication, gaming, social media, and more. Take a look at your phone’s app store and look at all the ways that apps can help you stay connected with the people you care about, no matter how far away you are!
