Tips for Surviving Your First 6 Months as a Truck Driver

When you’re just starting out as a brand-new truck driver, it can be a tough life.

When you’re just starting out as a brand-new truck driver, it can be a tough life. Because this first phase of your new career is likely going to be the most stressful and exhausting of all, you have to find ways to survive. How do you avoid burning out from the constant grind? We’ll look at some hard truths about the job, and how you can make it through regardless of any challenges that might come your way.

If You Get Lost

You can be as nervous or as confident as you want. But at some point, you will get lost. When this happens, keep your cool. Don’t panic, because panicking can be just about the worst thing that you do. Look for somewhere safe to stop and pull over. Consult your company-issued driving directions again. Once you feel calm, get your bearings – figure out where you’ve ended up, and determine how much farther you need to go to get to your actual destination.

Trust your company-issued GPS device. A GPS meant for a passenger car won’t work the same way for a large truck. If you have a CB radio in your truck, don’t be afraid to get on and call for help. If all else fails, write your route down. Keep a quick reference of it at a moment’s glance.

Get Plenty of Rest

It’s also important that you get plenty of rest. If you find that your eyelids are drooping, it’s time to stretch and take a break. Sometimes a quick power nap of ten or fifteen minutes will be all you need. You can also do some jumping jacks. If it hasn’t worn off (or doesn’t affect you anymore from drinking too much), get some coffee. Whatever else you do, don’t fall asleep at the wheel!

Constant Communication

Delays will happen, and so will highway accidents. Constantly communicate with your managers and dispatchers. Remain professional, and keep it together. Don’t forget to reach out to your friends and family, too. They’ll miss you as much as you’ll miss them while you’re gone.

Take Care of Yourself

Above all else, take care of yourself. Treat yourself to small rewards. If you drive safely and keep your wits about you, you will go far.
