Everything You Wanted To Know About Lift Axles

lift axles

Understanding the regulations for lift axles is important.

Lift axles are auxiliary axles that are added to a truck to increase its weight carrying capacity.  One concern regarding lift axles are the state laws surrounding them.  Most states have used weight limits that are extremely similar to the Federal regulations. These regulations encourage spreading truck poundage over additional axles, which allows for the protection of large bridges and road pavements.

All About The Lift Axle

There is much to learn about lift axles. Lift axles are non-powered and are almost always installed either ahead of or behind the driving tandem axles on a tractor or straight truck. Most lift axle suspensions use airbags to carry weight. However, some designs incorporate spring based systems.  Proper air bag pressure, and proper spring rating is critical in lift axle operation.  Air and springs are used to raise and lower the axle, when need arises.  Furthermore, the driver is in control of all of this because the driver typically will use electric switches that control the lift axle.

Non-Steerable Lift Axles vs Steerable

Typically, non-steerable lift axles need to be raised before turning a sharp corner, otherwise excessive tire wear will occur.  In fact, these lift axles require that controls be inside the cab to protect the integrity of the truck’s tires. Steerable Lift Axles are available to help address this potential tire wear, however they typically are more expensive than Non-Steerable designs.

Maryland Lift Laws And Vehicle Equipment Laws

Maryland has a bumper and frame restriction of 28 inches for most trucks. There are many specifications as to how and where on the truck a lift axle can be installed.  As well, in Maryland, lift axles require regular certification.  Certification involves validating pressure, tire size, weight carrying capacity, as well as testing overall operation.  There are also very specific requirements for an externally mounted air pressure gauge and regulator.  To ensure proper compliance, it is important to have these components checked and serviced by a properly certified Repair Facility.
