Increase Fuel Efficiency by Reducing Idling Time

Every trucker strives to increase their fuel efficiency.

Every trucker strives to increase their fuel efficiency. Independent truckers and trucking companies alike want to increase their profits by spending less on fuel. Diesel fuel is expensive, it’s a fact every trucker has to deal with. That said, there are several little things you can do to make sure you’re getting the most out of your tank.

Idle Shutdown Timer

One thing that can help increase your fuel efficiency is an idle shutdown timer. While they are very useful for boosting fuel efficiency, some may have drawbacks where driver comfort is concerned. If you choose to go with this method, make sure your idle shutdown timer is programmable. Have it keep the power going long enough to cool the cab to a certain temperature for warmer weather and warm it for the cooler weather.

Turn Off the Engine Whenever You Can

If you let your truck’s engine run for more than 10 seconds without moving, you’re actually using more fuel than you would be using if you restarted your truck. The larger your truck’s engine is, the more fuel it will waste while idling. If you plan to stop for more than a minute, you should turn off the engine. This is only if you’re stopped in a safe place. DO NOT turn off your engine if you are sitting in traffic.

Solar Power

Another way to increase your fuel efficiency is with solar panels. Solar panels can power your auxiliary power unit without the need for idling. The idea of using solar panels for mobile power was first introduced to the RV industry. Recently, truckers have been seeing their usefulness as well. The roof of a 53-foot trailer has enough space on its roof to hold about 50 100-watt solar flex panels, which would generate about 5,000 watts, or about 280 amps, of DC power per hour. When this system is combined with a power inverter, it can produce up to 3,000 watts of AC power per hour.
