Are You Suffering Burnout or Are You Just Tired?

Like any other job, trucking can be exhausting.

Like any other job, trucking can be exhausting. The long hours on the road can really take a toll on your body. If you’re not getting enough sleep, that will just make everything worse. As a truck driver, you operate very large machinery on the road, so not getting enough sleep can have dire consequences. Know the signs of fatigue and burnout so that you can keep yourself and other drivers safe!

Signs of Burnout

When you’re fatigued, it can usually be cured by adopting healthier habits: get a good night’s sleep, take your vitamins, give yourself regular breaks to take a walk, and other things like that. Burnout is a lot more mental than physical. Yes, you do feel extremely fatigued when suffering from burnout, but it’s so much more than that. Some of the symptoms are:

  • Mental breakdown
  • Irrational and/or prolonged negative thoughts
  • Feeling like you want to park your truck somewhere and just walk away
  • Uncontrolled emotions, with or without a “rational” reason is common.

Stop Burnout Before it Starts

If you don’t want to suffer from burnout, there are some pretty easy ways to prevent it: mainly, developing healthier habits and treating yourself well.

Be creative: There’s a reason art therapy works so well for so many people! What kind of art do you love? Take photos of the places you see. Belt out your favorite tunes while driving down the road. Grab a sketchbook to doodle in while you’re waiting for a client. Art has been proven to lower stress, and make it easier to concentrate!

Be active: Okay, so trucking is not an active career but there are still plenty of ways you can fit some activity into your day. Many truck stops have walking trails, or at the very least they have a sidewalk. Even a simple quick stretch works if that’s all you have time for!

Be Social: Truckers sometimes keep strange schedules. You work whenever the work is available, right? This can make socialization a bit more difficult, but finding a way to talk to another human can really lower your stress levels. Even if you just strike up a pleasant conversation with the guy at the next table at the truck stop, it’s still a conversation. And who knows: maybe talking to your will have made his day better too!
