Baltimore Bus Repairs: The Importance of Wheel Balancing Services

As winter storms come into the Baltimore area, it’s a good time to schedule mechanical repairs / bus repairs for your company vehicles. An important bus maintenance you should immediately schedule is wheel balancing. This article will provide information about wheel balancing and the importance of keeping up with regular wheel balancing and overall bus repairs.

What is Bus Wheel Balancing?

Wheel Balancing is the process of making bus tires and wheels (or any other vehicle) spin safe and securely without any vibrations. The weight of bus wheels and tires should consistently be balanced/ even around the axle.

Wheel Balancing is completed when tires and wheels are examined for heavy spots on the wheel-tire components and a measured lead weight is installed on the opposite part of the wheels where no heavy spots exist.

You will know the tires and wheels of a bus are unbalanced when you experience the following symptoms during driving:

  1. Certain tires are heavier than other ties.
  2. Vibration is experienced in the driver’s seat and floorboard at high speeds (50 mph or more).
  3. Vibration is experienced from the steering wheel at 60 mph and over.
  4. There is visible cup wear on the tires.
  5. Tires appear uneven such as tread being deeper on the edges than the center or the tire appears inflated/ under inflated.

When wheel balancing is completed, the brake drum and bus wheels will all be balanced.
