Hypertension and the Effect on Truck Drivers

Trucking Shipping SeasonsHypertension is an ailment that many Americans deal with on a daily basis. However, hypertension and high blood pressure can have an effect on truck drivers. In order to better handle their hypertension, truck drivers should be aware about a number of things dealing with hypertension:

  • In order to drive, a truck driver must have a blood pressure of 140/90 without the use of medication
  • Those who do suffer from hypertension or high blood pressure do have the ability to be medically certified to drive
  • A driver does have the ability to become certified to drive while on medication as long as their blood pressure stays under 140/90
  • A DOT certification for a driver can be from 3 months to a full year depending on how severe the case is

So what are the stages of hypertension?

  • Stage one of hypertension ranges from 140/90 to 150/90. Drivers who are in stage one can be certified to drive for a full year versus a two year certification. When it comes to recertification, the driver must be at 140/90 or lower.
  • Stage two of hypertension ranges from 160/100 to 179/109. A driver suffering from stage two hypertension can only be certified for 3 months instead of a full year. In order to receive a full year, the driver must lower their blood pressure without medication.
  • Stage three hypertension is 180/110+ and immediately disqualifies drivers from receiving a certification. A driver must lower their blood pressure before they can try to be recertified for six months.
