3 Ways to Beat Loneliness on the Road

3 Ways to Beat Loneliness on the Road

Trucking is a useful and very rewarding career. Unfortunately, it can also be quite lonely.

Trucking is a useful and very rewarding career. Unfortunately, it can also be quite lonely. As a trucker, you spend the vast majority of your time on the road by yourself. If you’re not used to a solitary lifestyle, you may feel isolated and cut off from loved ones. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to beat these feelings of loneliness.

Eat Healthy and Exercise Often

Healthy eating and movement are just as good for your mental health as for your physical health. When you’re out on the road, there aren’t always a lot of healthy eating options, but do yourself a favor and try to be as healthy as possible. Before you leave for your next long haul, stock your truck with fresh fruit that you can snack on. Granola is a healthy and delicious snack if you want some crunch. Many fruits and vegetables make great truck snacks because they don’t require refrigeration.

Talk to Friends and Family as Much as Possible

Even when you’re out on the road, your loved ones are never more than a phone call away. If you’re driving and can’t answer the phone, make sure they know that you won’t always be able to answer but if they leave a message, you will listen as soon as you can. Beware of hands-free devices because they can still distract you from the road, and are still illegal in some states.

Listen to Music and Podcasts

Instead of talking on the phone, try listening to a podcast. There are many interesting podcasts out there, for a wide variety of different interests. If podcasts aren’t really your thing, try making a playlist that you can listen to while you drive. For an extra connection to loved ones you’re missing, ask someone to create a playlist for you. Depending on your budget, satellite radio may also be a wise investment.
