How to Avoid Eye Strain when Trucking at Night

When you do a lot of driving at night, you have a drastically increased risk of developing eye strain.

No matter what profession you’re in, eye strain is a real problem. When you do a lot of driving at night, you have a drastically increased risk of developing eye strain. All of the bright lights of headlights, signs, billboards, and even some outdoor lighting from businesses coupled with the darkness on the road can cause your eyes to struggle when trying to focus on the road. When it’s dark outside, your eyes are drawn to whatever light source they can find. All of this straining can cause headaches and migraines, and over time can cause your vision to deteriorate faster. Follow these tips to fight the effects of eye strain when driving at night.

Combatting Eye Strain

There are a few things you can do to minimize eye strain from driving at night.

Dim and turn off any unnecessary lights on the inside of your cab. If you’re unsure of exactly how to do this, refer to the vehicle’s owner’s manual. You should never have the overhead light on while driving.

Check on your windshield wipers to ensure they are performing properly. Many drivers are surprised to learn that the wipers they have been using to clean the windshield have actually been spreading all kinds of dirt and debris across the glass. Keep the windshield clean, both inside and outside.

Keep your eyes moving. Your truck is a large vehicle, so it is always good to stay aware of your surroundings. This becomes especially important when you’re trying to avoid eye strain. Avoid staring at one spot for too long.

Take breaks whenever possible. Yes, you have deadlines to keep. However, even just five minutes of closing your eyes can help to alleviate strain.

If you wear corrective lenses, ask your optician about applying the anti-reflective coating to your glasses. Glaring lights are going to happen. The anti-reflective coating used by opticians really helps to reduce the straining effects of the bright lights.
