Truck Fuel Efficiency 101

Truck Fuel Efficiency 101

Get as miles as you can from every tank of fuel!

Whether you’re an owner-operator or you work for a large shipping company, you’re always keeping track of your fuel efficiency. After all, truck fuel can be quite pricey, so you’ll want to make sure you get as many miles as you can from each tank. If you’re trying to increase or regulate your truck’s fuel efficiency, try some of these tricks!

Momentum

Even when empty, your truck is quite heavy. When you’re driving down the road, the weight can create a significant amount of momentum. If you’re mindful of the terrain you’re driving over, you can use momentum to your advantage. For example, don’t put your foot on the gas when you’re going downhill (unless you need to do so to remain at a safe speed). If you see a slowdown or stop ahead, start slowing down long before you get to it. Avoid using your brakes too much, as this can lower your fuel efficiency.

Speed

The more you accelerate, the more fuel you use. Remaining at a constant speed can increase your fuel efficiency. Consistent speed means consistent fuel usage. Avoid traveling at times where there will be a lot of stop and go traffic whenever possible. Along with being frustrating, the constant speeding up and slowing down can use up a lot of fuel.

Tire Pressure

It’s a small thing, but keeping your tire pressure up can also increase your fuel efficiency. When carrying heavy loads, your engine has to work extra hard. If your tire pressure isn’t high enough, that can make your engine work even harder. Increased tire pressure allows the wheels of your truck to roll faster with far less effort.

Fueling Up

Never over-fill your fuel tank. Heat from a running vehicle and even the sun can cause it to expand. Also, that much liquid makes the fuel tanks heavy. The heavier your truck is, the more fuel it will take to make it move.
