The Ups and Downs of Being a Long Haul Trucker

If you’re considering a career in long-haul trucking, it is important to weigh all of the pros and cons carefully to make the best decision for you.

Like any other career, long-haul trucking has its ups and downs. You get to see and meet so many different people, but the time away might make you miss your loved ones. If you’re considering a career in long-haul trucking, it is important to weigh all of the pros and cons carefully to make the best decision for you.

Getting Paid to Travel

As a long haul trucker, you do a whole lot of driving. This means that you also get to see a lot more places than most people, too. What’s better than getting to see the sites and getting paid to do it?

Can be Difficult to Stay Healthy

Trucking is a largely sedentary career. Since you’re driving all the time, your almost always sitting down. It also doesn’t leave a lot of time for exercise or physical activity. It can be tough to balance driving and exercising.

To put it plainly, truck stops don’t always have a lot of healthy food options. There are some notable exceptions, but unfortunately, most of them aren’t particularly healthy.

Variety and Flexibility

There is quite a bit of variety involved in a trucking career, not only in the places you see and people you meet but also in the types of jobs you can take. There are hauls during the day, and there are some that happen overnight. Some truckers prefer driving at night.

There is also variety in locations and companies to work with. Because of the nationwide truck driver shortage, it is much easier for skilled truckers to choose who they work with. If you start working with a company and you’re unhappy, it’s pretty likely that there’s another company in town or nearby that might be a better fit.

Lots of Time Away from Home

Long haul trucking can also mean long periods of time away from home. If you have family and loved ones at home, this can be difficult. If you think you may become homesick, try starting out with short hauls. Gradually increase the time as you feel comfortable.
