Managing Stress on the Road

Middleton & Meads Stress

Driving has its stressful moments, but there are ways to manage your stress so you can stay positive and keep on trucking.

Driving long distances can be a wonderful adventure, but it can also be the perfect storm for stressful situations and incidents. Maintaining your calm during heavy traffic or when people are just being careless is a critical skill for truck drivers because you will see a lot of things out there, and you will need the tools for managing stress on the road so you can keep on trucking.

Take Care of Yourself

You should be taking care of your body all the time, especially as a truck driver who is behind the wheel for the majority of each day. Take simple steps like drinking water, leveling up some of your meals to healthier options, and doing quick stretches and exercises whenever you stop somewhere. Maintaining a happy and healthy body can help you maintain a happy and healthy mental state, too. This is a great preventative measure—feeling good will help you remain calm even in stressful situations.

Listen to Music

Listen to music that you know will have a positive effect on your mood. You can even make a playlist on your favorite music app specifically for times when you experience an excess of stress due to problems while you’re on the road. Whether it’s soft and subtle music that helps you clear your mind or a catchy dance tune that helps you shake it off, music can be a huge help in managing stress while you’re on the road.

Take a Break

If the stress is overtaking you and nothing else is working, find a place to pull off of the road and take a break. Whether you just pop by a restaurant to sit down and enjoy the healing properties of food or stop at a nearby truck stop to unwind, get somewhere you can relax for a while before you head out again. You can do some physical exercise and take a shower (if possible) or even call a loved one to help calm yourself down and refocus on other things. Distracting your mind with healthier thoughts and activities will let the stress melt away so you can get back on the road refreshed and ready to go.
